FC Red Bull Salzburg are losing a key figure: goalkeeper Alexander Schlager, 30, is leaving the club after three years to join Bundesliga side Werder Bremen. The Austrian international, who has been Salzburg’s No. 1 since returning in summer 2023, has made 113 competitive appearances for the club across the ADMIRAL Bundesliga, UNIQA ÖFB Cup, UEFA Champions League and Europa League.

What happened?

The transfer is now official: Schlager will join Werder Bremen following the World Cup, joining teammate Marco Friedl, who moved to the Hanseatic club in summer 2023. The Salzburg-born stopper returned in 2023 as Austria’s No. 1 and has since featured in 22 ADMIRAL Bundesliga games, the UNIQA ÖFB Cup and European competitions. Salzburg currently sit 2nd in the Bundesliga with 37 points, just one behind leaders Sturm Graz.

Schlager explained his move by pointing to his strong connection with Bremen. “At the end of the day, I want more and I feel Werder is the perfect place for me,” he said. “I can really identify with this club – that was the deciding factor.” Before finalizing his switch, he had already spoken with Friedl and Romano Schmid, both of whom play for Bremen.

Why the exit hurts Salzburg

Losing Schlager hits Salzburg hard as they prepare for the new season. The Salzburg-born stopper has been a reliable presence since his return in 2023 and brings invaluable international experience – including starring at the 2026 World Cup in the U.S. as Austria’s first-choice keeper. With 42 goals scored and just 26 conceded (+16 goal difference), Salzburg’s defense has been solid, but Schlager’s leadership will be tough to replace.

What’s next for the Bulls?

Salzburg must move fast to fill the void between the posts. The search for a new No. 1 is already underway, though competition for top goalkeepers is fierce. Youngster Leo Mätzler could step in temporarily after impressing in the Cup. The Bulls remain on course for the title with 10 wins, 7 draws and 5 losses from 22 games, but the pressure is rising.

The 2026/27 season kicks off for Salzburg on July 27 when they host SK Rapid Wien in their opening Bundesliga fixture.
